Preparing for a Title Fight
With the National title for Super Sedans less that a week away, two Goldfields drivers led by the current Western Australian Champion Rob Bawdon are finalizing their assault plans and putting the finishing touches on their machines before heading off to Mildura in Victoria to take part in the prestigious event over the 7/8/ 9th March.
In addition to Bawdon, Dean Shore will also fly the Goldfields flag in an attempt to bring the national title home to Kalgoorlie. Bawdon who has been in devastating form this season is considered a serious contender for the title in his Danny Smith constructed Rocket super sedan. His drive to win the WA state title in November with the car carrying a suspension failure in the left front wheel was a clear demonstration of the ability and determination of this talented Goldfields driver. Dean Shore is also looking forward to the event and has the ability and machinery to be at the pointy end of the final when the chequered flag falls on Sunday night.
A small hiccup in the plans has come for Shore who is burning the midnight oil to be ready to depart with the other WA teams after delays in the delivery of the new BA falcon body kit for his Ausdrill sponsored machine. Shore was asked at short notice to change the shape and paint scheme of the car to match that of the Ausdrill V8 supercar of Michael Patrizi. With our major sponsor becoming involved in the V8 Supercars with Kalgoorlie born Michael Patrizi, it was logical to try to reflect the branding that Ausdrill are aiming to achieve for supercars within the speedway arena as well said Shore. Other than the body and paint the car is ready to roll so we will put in a couple of big days and we should be ready to leave with Robbie and the rest of the WA contingent which numbers 9 cars in total, including past state title holders “Big Bad” Bert Vosbergen, Keith Higgs and Marc Giancola.
With 66 drivers nominated for the event, the local boys will have a lot to think about on the 2,400km journey to Mildura. To be assured to make the “A” main on Sunday night, drivers will need to finish in the top three during their heats and with the level of competition in the field that will be a win in itself. The best of the best will be there and it will be survival of the fittest and the ability to keep outta trouble during the heats that will be the key to getting a good starting spot for the final commented Rob.
Following their return from the national title the two teams are scheduled to compete at the Perth Motorplex & Albany Speedway over the Easter weekend before they will again face off against up to 10 of the best drivers from the Eastern states in the $30,000 Barrick Kanowna Goldrush Hammerdown series in Esperance on the 28th March and Kalgoorlie on 29th March.
